Cooperation between PFA and science The PFA recognizes and fully supports the idea that any fishery activity must be based on scientific research in order to conduct a responsible, sustainable fishery in the long term. Moreover the PFA and its member companies have a long history of active cooperation with the scientific community. This cooperation is shown not only in scientific projects that are initiated by third parties, such as the European Commission, the member states and/or research laboratories, but also in projects that are initiated and often financed by the PFA itself. A summary of PFA's cooperation with science can be read as follows:
| a. | | cooperation with the basic data collection on landings, sales notes, catches, discards etc.; | | b. | | on request making available additional data to the scientific community that are not part of the data collection arrangements; | | c. | | entertaining an active and open dialogue with scientists on many opportunities, such as in consultation meetings, developing recommendations by the Regional Advisory Councils relevant to the PFA (Pelagic RAC, Long Distance RAC), and ad-hoc meetings with scientists on numerous subjects; | | d. | | investing in data collection and stock assessment projects in areas and/or species where there is a lack of relevant scientific data (Western Africa, Southern Pacific, horse mackerel in western waters) | | e. | | starting PFA specific research projects to improve the impact of PFA's fishing operations, such as the avoidance of by-catch of charismatic species (such as mantra rays) in certain waters or the improvement of the selectivity in the horse mackerel and mackerel fishery. |
